How to Balance Work and Life
Lately I have been thinking a lot about how to balance
work and personal life. I am really passioned about my business
and blogging but it can be time consuming. I can spend all day working on my
client portfolio non-stop or looking at beautiful pictures and reading style
books . Sometime I feel that I don't give much time to my family and loved ones.
And it drives me crazy, I feel guilty!
So recently I found a wonderful article on How
to stay sane while working from home. I would like to share what I'have
learned from there.
Create your work space
Dont just sit at the couch with your laptop and
TV infront of you {thats what I used to do}. It can be very distractive and
uncomfortable. Set a separate space, preferably room where you can place all
your equipment and do not be distracted by other noises or motions. Plus when
you done with your work, you can just simply leave your office and do family
stuff. Because it's impossible to stop thinking about the office if work is
literally lying on the coffee table.
Appointments Only
Not everybody should be allowed in your office. If family
members or friends wish to visit you they should set an appointment in advance.
Nothing should be taken from the office without your permission. Treat your work
space just like you would be at the real job.
Phone
Set a separate phone line
for business purposes only. You'll be less likely to be interrupted by friends
and family who are just calling to chat.
Schedule working hours
With your office being right next to you, it is
always tempting to go back to work, try to avoid that otherwise you will be back
to non-stop work and no Personal life. Make a conscious decision to separate work time from
personal time.
Escape
Go on a lunch with your friends. Do sunday BBQ
party. Go see the movie. Schedule lunch or happy hour with your family
weekly. You need to see some other people and places. Think of it as a boost of
support , inspiration and happiness.
Dress Code
Sometimes wearing PJ all day can be too relaxing and
might disturb your concentration lever. If you have that feeling, try to
dress in a way that makes you feel most productive. Doesn't have to be suit ,
but maybe nice shirt and loafers would do the
trick.
Exercise
Exercise regularly!
Exercising can ultimately help you get more done by boosting your energy level
and ability to concentrate.
Household
Household
Organize household tasks
efficiently, such as running errands in batches or doing a load of laundry every
day, rather than saving it all for your day off. This days you can order food
online. have your dry cleaning dropped off at your home and order supples from
post office delivered to your door.
Also, Put family events on a weekly family calendar.
Limit time-consuming misunderstandings by communicating clearly and listening
carefully.
Track your time
Track everything you do
for one week, including work-related and personal activities. Decide what's
necessary and what satisfies you the most. Cut off activities that you don't
enjoy or can't handle .
