10 Ways to Burn Fat Faster

10 Ways to Burn Fat Faster

Read on for some medically proven moves that'll make it happen - and help you drop some pounds. By Hallie Levine, REDBOOK.

Stock up on green tea
Green tea isn't known only for its cancer-fighting benefits: It may help boost your metabolism, too. People who took green-tea extract three times a day saw their metabolic rate increase by about 4 percent, according to a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. (Translation: You could burn an extra 60 calories a day, which equals about six pounds a year!) It may be because green tea contains catechins, which increase levels of the metabolism-speeding brain chemical norepinephrine, says Joy Bauer, a New York City nutritionist and author of Cooking with Joy.

Pump iron
Weight training is the ultimate way to burn calories fast. "A pound of muscle burns up to nine times the calories of a pound of fat," explains Richard Cotton, M.A., chief exercise physiologist for myexerciseplan.com. Weight training increases your resting metabolic rate, which is the number of calories you burn while sitting on your butt. What's more, it gives your metabolism an added boost after you exercise: It remains in overdrive for up to two hours after the last bench press, according to a study published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise. Strapped for time? Try these quick moves: squats, bench step-ups, lunges, push-ups, pull-ups and crunches. In a pinch, just do single sets of 10 for each exercise - you'll get optimal results for the time invested.

Eat iron
Yeah, we just told you to pump iron, but you also need to eat it. "If you don't have enough of this mineral, your body can't get enough oxygen to your cells, which slows down your metabolism," explains Samantha Heller, R.D., a nutritionist at the New York University Medical Center. Most multivitamins contain around 18 mg (the RDA for adults); you can also get your fill by eating three to four daily servings of foods rich in iron, such as lean red meat, chicken, fortified cereal and soy nuts. If you are feeling symptoms such as fatigue and weakness, ask your doctor to test you for anemia (it's a simple blood test) at your next physical.

Order water - and ask for a refill
A German study found that when you drink 17 ounces of water (about two glasses) within a certain time frame, your metabolic rate shoots up by about 30 percent. Using these results, they estimate that by increasing your current water intake by 1.5 liters a day, a person would burn an extra 17,400 calories a year, resulting in about a five-pound weight loss.

Get your thyroid checked

Suspect you have a sluggish metabolism? You might have hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid gland, which afflicts about 25 percent of American women - many of whom don't know they have the condition, according to the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists. "The thyroid gland controls your body's metabolism, so one of the first signs that it may be off is an inability to lose weight," explains Pamela Peeke, M.D., professor of medicine at the University of Maryland and author of Fight Fat After Forty. Your doctor can determine if you're suffering from hypothyroidism by running a blood test. If you do have an underactive thyroid, you'll be treated with a synthetic thyroid supplement, which you will need to take for the rest of your life (it will return your metabolism to normal, so it should be easier to lose weight).

Avoid alcohol
Want to keep your favorite meals from going straight to your hips (thighs, belly)? Wash them down with water, not wine. Alcohol slows your metabolism by depressing the central nervous system. A British study found that when alcohol was added to a high-fat, high-calorie meal, less dietary fat was burned off and more was stored as body fat.

Rev up workouts Interval training - in which you add bursts of high-intensity moves into your workout - is a surefire metabolism booster, says Glenn Gaesser, Ph.D., director of the Kinesiology Program at the University of Virginia and author of The Spark. Researchers at Laval University in Quebec foundthat high-intensity interval training burns more fat than regular, consistent aerobic exercise. If you usually jog at a 10-minute-mile pace, for example, add a 30-second sprint every five minutes. Or add a one-minute incline to your treadmill workout every five minutes. "Even if you just have 10 minutes for a quick workout, you can walk at a normal pace and then add in a 30-second bout of speed-walking every three minutes," recommends Gaesser.

Do more dairy
Women who ate low-fat dairy products, such as nonfat yogurt and low-fat cheese, three to four times a day lost 70 percent more fat than low-dairy dieters, according to a study published in the journal Obesity Research. "Calcium serves as a switch that tells your body to burn excess fat faster," explains study author Michael Zemel, M.D., director of the Nutrition Institute at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Sorry, but you won't reap the same benefits from calcium-fortified O.J. Research shows that you get the best results from dairy products themselves, not fortified foods. Aim for 1,200 mg, which includes about three servings of dairy a day.

Take up a new sport
Are you like Old Faithful when it comes to your morning walk or evening jog? Know this: The more you do an activity, the more your body adapts to it, so you burn fewer calories. If you want to light a fire under your metabolism, consider cross-training. For example, if you normally walk, try biking instead. "Since you're not used to working all those different muscles, it's a more intense workout, which can translate into a greater metabolic after-burn because your body is working harder to recover and get oxygen to all your tissues," says Carol Espel, M.S., an exercise physiologist for Equinox Fitness Clubs in New York City.

19 Best Ways To Lose Stomach Fat Fast …

19 Best Ways To Lose Stomach Fat Fast …

42 Best Ways To Lose Stomach Fat Fast ...

This fantastic list of 42 Best Ways to Lose Stomach Fat Fast includes all the tips you need to lose that belly fat that’ve been bugging you for months or even years. According to 2011 statistics, 90% of US adult population are not happy with their abdominal muscle tone and they would gladly have a flatter stomach or lose that stomach fat altogether. Not only is belly fat unflattering, but it has been scientifically linked to many health problems such as bloating, heartburn, diabetes, heart disease, stroke etc. (and you thought having a muffin top was the worst part!). The good news is losing stomach fat and getting a flat tummy or even getting those fabulous six pack abs is not as difficult and unachievable as many people think.

1. How much weight you want to lose?

Before you do your first sit-up or dump that Cola down the drain, you need to decide how many pounds you want to lose. Losing weight and getting rid of belly fat takes some work, and you really need to set a goal to keep an eye on your progress.
You’re not going to lose all the fat around your waist in 3 days, and you will definitely need to break some sweat before you lose that stomach fat. Just remember, that it’s completely doable and if you keep implementing these best ways to lose stomach fat, you’ll get the body you wanted in a matter of months.
So, once you know how much weight you want to lose or how many inches around your waist you want to get rid of, all you need to do is pick minimum 10 ways to lose belly fat from the list below and apply them for 2 weeks. Afterwards, weigh yourself again or take the new measurements. You’ll see that your waist is getting slimmer and you’ve already shed a few pounds. At this point, add 5 more routines from this list to the 10 you’ve been doing before and carry on for 2 more weeks. Then again, do the measurements to track your progress and add 5 more routines to the 15 ways to lose belly fat you’ve been using so far. Depending on your weight loss goal and your current weight, it will take anywhere from 4 weeks to 6 months maximum to get that perfect stomach you’ve always wanted.
Now, let’s proceed to the tips to help you get that sexy stomach!

2. Carry water everywhere to start losing stomach fat

Whether you’re on a weight loss journey, you’re trying to lose belly fat, or you’re just trying to be healthier, it’s always a good idea to keep well-hydrated, and to do that, you’ll want to keep a bottle of water with you everywhere you go. Sip from it every now and then, and you’ll feel fuller, more invigorated, and you’ll also be a lot less likely to indulge in a sugar-laden soda or juice if you’re not thirsty! This is a sure way to lose stomach fat fast, try it for a week and you’ll see what a difference it makes!

3. Color your plate

Did you know that the more colorful your meal, the more healthful it’s likely to be? Think about it: carrots, peppers, spinach, tomatoes: they’re all brilliant colors, and they’re all very healthful choices! Keep your plate colorful and you’re well on your way to losing that belly fat!

4. Cut out fast food – it’s an absolute must for having a flat tummy

Fast food is the worst culprit in the battle against stomach fat. It’s convenient, sure, but it’s loaded with calories and fat, and those calories and fat head straight to our “problem areas,” our bellies and butts! Skip the fast food, or at least opt for healthier fast food options, like salads (without fried chicken or calorie-rich ranch on them) instead of fries. But if you are really set on losing stomach fat fast, avoid the fast food altogether.

5. Cut out soda

A serving of soda contains more calories than a large banana, with none of the nutritional value. many of those calories come from high fructose corn syrup, which our bodies don’t really know how to process, and which often ends up turning into belly fat. Ditch the soda and save those calories for something much better for burning belly fat!

6. Doing your weight bearing exercises – one of the best ways to lose stomach fat fast

If you think you’ll need to spend the rest of your life doing sit-ups and crunches only, so you can burn belly fat and keep it off, that’s not quite true. You’ll need to do all sorts of exercises, in moderation, including weight bearing exercises, like brisk walking, jogging, and the like. Remember, overall fitness and nutrition is the key for losing stomach fat, and making sure it doesn’t come back!

7. Do your non-weight bearing exercises, too!

In addition to the weight bearing exercises to help you burn belly fat, you’ll also need to add non-weight bearing exercises, like biking and rowing. These two (weight bearing and non-weight bearing), combined with weight training and cardio, and some yoga thrown in for good measure, will give you a lifetime of fitness and good health — and of course will melt that belly fat away for good!

8. Don’t be complacent!

Once you’ve got the body you want (no belly fat in sight!), that doesn’t mean it’s time to rest on your laurels. Don’t stop exercising. Don’t stop eating right. Keep up with your plan, and you’ll keep your new hot body!

9. Don’t starve yourself! It won’t help you lose stomach fat faster.

Starving yourself will not help you burn belly fat. Cut calories, by all means, especially the empty calories, but to be healthy, and lose belly fat, you need to eat well. Starving yourself is dangerous, terribly unhealthy, and it won’t work anyway!

10. Don’t deprive yourself, either!

In addition to not starving yourself, don’t feel you have to deprive yourself all the time either just because you want to lose stomach fat. Is this carte-blanche for eating an entire carton of Ben & Jerry’s? No. But you CAN have a small dish, once in a while, to keep the edge off your cravings, and to remind yourself that life is good! Now, could there be a better way to lose stomach fat? :)

11. Don’t give up on your goal to lose stomach fat fast

After a couple of weeks you might find that you’re not losing weight or inches anymore. What gives? Don’t give up, sweetie! That’s just a plateau, a sign your body is adjusting to all of the positive things you’re doing. Keep going! You’re getting there! You are now much closer to losing all that stomach fat than ever!

12. Don’t try to isolate

It’s a scientific and biological fact: you absolutely cannot isolate one set of muscles and lose fat just in that one spot, and that includes belly fat. If there’s a product or pill that promises otherwise, it’s a scam, straight up. To lose stomach fat, you need to change your diet and exercise habits, all over. It’s that simple. Truly!

13. Drink a glass of water before you eat

If you’re thirsty, you’re going to eat more. Isn’t that strange? But it’s true. So before you sit down to eat, drink a glass of cool water, wait a few minutes, then dish out your sensible portion and begin to eat. Much better! You’ll be surprised at how effective this way to lose stomach fat is. Give it a try!
14. Eat 5 small meals a day to lose stomach fat fast
Rather than eating three large meals every day, switch to five smaller meals: a light breakfast, a mid-morning snack, a light lunch, a mid-afternoon snack, and a balanced dinner. Smaller portions more often will keep you from feeling hungry. And by the way, when I say “snack,” of course I mean something healthful, not a Twinkie! This way to lose stomach fat does not require a lot of sacrifice, all you need to do is figure out a schedule for your meals, and, with time you’ll be surprised at how eating 5 meals a day will become your new healthy lifestyle habit.

15. Give yourself 20 minutes to feel full after the meal

Did you know that it takes a few minutes for your tummy to realize it’s full? That’s why it’s important to eat slowly and take little breaks between the courses. Otherwise, you’ll end up over-eating, undoing all of the diet magic you accomplished that day, and that’s not what you want if you need to lose that stomach fat fast.

16. Get the right fit!

No matter how thin you are, if you’re wearing jeans that are too small, you’re going to have unsightly muffin top — so make sure you have the right fit, even if it means going up a size or two, and you may not need to burn as much belly fat as you thought! Now, this is probably the easiest way to “lose” stomach fat fast, but bear with me, there are many more ways that will actually require action.

17. Get your cardio going for losing stomach fat faster!

While weight bearing and non-weight bearing exercise is important to help you lose belly fat, you’ll also need to add cardio to your routine. Try for 20 minutes a day, 5 days a week. What counts as cardio? Anything that makes your heart pound hard for that entire 20 minutes: bouncing on the trampoline, dancing your butt off, running, you name it! Any cardio is good if you are determined to lose that stomach fat fast.

18. Have a specific goal in mind for your weight loss

In any endeavor, it’s important to have a goal, and keep it in mind. Make sure your goal for losing stomach fat is realistic, and write it down, repeat it: it’s your new mantra. This goal will keep you motivated on the days when you don’t want to exercise, and when that pint of Ben & Jerry’s is calling your name.

19. Ignore the hype when it comes to commercial products for losing stomach fat fast

Let me say this once and for all: if a special diet plan, a pill, or a piece of workout equipment promises to help you burn stomach fat fast, it’s a lie, no matter which celebrity says it works. The absolute only way to burn belly fat fast is to change your diet and exercise… sound familiar? It’s the second time I’ve said something like this in this list. It’s that important. Be skeptical of new products that promise miracles. They’re a waste of your time and money!

8 Steps to Train Yourself to Run …

8 Steps to Train Yourself to Run …

8 Steps to Train Yourself to Run ...

Training yourself to run is more than a good project, it’s very rewarding! I started training myself to run about two years ago, and I haven’t looked back since. Next year will be my first attempt at a full-blown marathon! If you want to give the sport a try, you don’t need to pay a personal trainer. You can train yourself to run if you really want to! It takes a lot of hard work and dedication, but the end result is more than worth it. Here’s how to train yourself to be a runner!

1. Just Do It

When training yourself to run, you can’t make excuses. The first step is to just get out the door. No matter how tired or sore you are (and you will be sore the first week!), you have to get on the track and get to moving. Try to run at least a little each day until your strength builds up.

2. Build Slow Progress

When you first start out training yourself to run, you can’t expect immediate progress. You have to be patient to see results! Start out your first week with a realistic goal. A half-mile or a mile is good. Run at least 5 days that week and try to complete your goal. The next week, add a little more distance to your run. Keep doing this until you’ve built up to your goal or until you’ve come a long way in running.

3. Stay Hydrated

This is probably the absolute most important tip I can give you for training yourself to run. If you’re dehydrated, you won’t make it far on the track, and you can end up very sick or in the hospital at worst. Be sure to start drinking 3 or 4 eight ounce glasses of water each day, and always take a water bottle with you on your run. Stay healthy and hydrated!

4. Eat Good Energy Sources

Running burns an extreme amount of calories. In order to stay healthy and strong, and have a good performance on your run, you need to eati good energy sources. Since you burn about 100 calories per mile that you run, try to consume twice that amount after a run. And make sure you incorporate plenty of protein and calcium into your diet. Protein promotes energy, while calcium helps ease muscle pain

5. Don’t over-do It

Many first time runners think they have to prove to themselves and the world that they can press on no matter what. This is a good attitude and spirit to have; however, you have to build up tolerance and muscle strength to be able to safely push your limits. You can’t start out running on sheer willpower alone! Take a few days each week to rest and recover. Your muscles will perform much better if you do. Train yourself to run by listening to your body’s needs and heeding them.

6. Cut Yourself Some Slack

All runners, even the best of the best, will have some days where they just don’t have any desire to run. This is your body telling you to back off. You are doing great with your training, so now you need to reward yourself! Don’t withhold sweets from yourself, or feel bad because you had to stop running sooner than you wanted. Give yourself some slack and have an ice cream. You deserve it! Just don’t make it a daily habit.

7. Cross-Train

A good practice to put into habit while you train yourself to run is cross training! On the days that you choose not to run, or at least once a week, you should do some other type of exercise. Running is repetitive; you use the same muscles in the same form over and over again. Time to use those other muscles! You’ll be surprised at how much cross training will improve your run. Some good examples of cross training are using an elliptical, taking a spin class, swimming, doing yoga, or trying a cardio abs session.

8. Take Care of Your Body

Want to know how to train yourself to run? Take care of your body. It’s the only one you’ve got, and you don’t get a replacement. Don’t beat yourself so mercilessly that you end up permanently hurt or in the hospital. Drink enough water, eat a good balanced diet, and always stretch your muscles before and after a workout. Above all else, accept yourself, and be proud of your progress!
Training yourself to run is attainable, but not without a little support from yourself, family, and friends. Don’t be too hard on yourself; remember that you will only perform as well as you think you can. Encourage yourself to be better, but know that you are doing great right now. Feel proud that you have accomplished this much and have started to train yourself to run! Do you know how to train yourself to run? Please comment below with your tips!

10 Reasons to Drink More Water …

10 Reasons to Drink More Water …

10 Reasons to Drink More Water ...

Reasons to drink more water are constantly featured in the media. The benefits of drinking water are touted constantly with health care professionals in a state of panic that more than three quarters of the world’s population is dehydrated, with people not being motivated to drink water every day. Here are 10 Reasons to Drink More Water:

1. Maintain a Healthy Body Weight

This one should get the attention of anybody who is trying to lose weight or is on a healthy eating program. When people drink enough water, they will effectively be able to assist the regulation of their appetite, as we often mistake hunger for thirst. When the body is getting enough water, metabolism functions at its most optimal level, maintain a healthy body weight.

2. Increased Energy Levels

That slow time of day, that mid-afternoon slump, when yawning is the only activity that is enabling you to stay awake, is not because you had a late night, or that you are completely exhausted, it is more likely that you are suffering from a mild form of dehydration. And before you reach for that extra cup of coffee, try having one or two glasses of water and see that almost immediately, just by the simple action to drink more water, you feel more alert and awake.

3. Healthy Bones

We all know that our body is made up of a large percentage of water, but did you know that your bones are actually made up of 50% of water? In order to make new bone cells and continue maintaining healthy bone levels, you need to drink enough water to help the bones continue to produce new bone cells. This is definitely one of the best reasons to drink water.

4. Eliminate Toxins

water helps to flush toxins and other harmful waste from the lymphatic system, kidneys and intestines. By keeping your system flushed, you will not suffer from the uncomfortable symptoms of a clogged lymphatic system, which can include fatigue and other health problems. Help your liver and kidneys do their jobs by giving them enough fluid to keep your body functioning at its most optimum level.

5. Water for Your Brain

In order for your brain to function properly, and have effective electrical functioning, your brain needs the right amount of water. It is estimated that the human brain gives off the same amount of electricity that a 60 watt light bulb does, and imagine how difficult it must be to get all that work done without enough fuel? Giving your brain enough water is another motivating factor to drink more water.

6. Healthy Skin

Everybody considers a glowing and healthy skin, free of blemishes and blackheads, to be the most coveted feature to a human face. People spend thousands on skin care products each and every year to help them achieve the beautiful, rosy glow of a glossy and healthy skin. What they forget is that drinking enough water will get them half way there, if not more. One of the most important reasons to drink water is for your skin. water helps to flush out the toxins and keep your skin looking fresh and healthy every day.

7. Good Digestion

Drinking enough water aids the effective functioning of the digestive system. For all of those people who suffer from the uncomfortable symptoms of constipation, fibre on its own may not be enough to help you alleviate the problem. In order for the digestive system to be efficient in waste removal, there needs to be enough water to help the functions. So before your reach for a high fibre supplement, check on your water intake first.

8. Jump Start Your Body

Just when you thought you needed 2 cups of coffee at a time to get you and your body going in the morning, in actual fact, if you swapped your morning coffee fix for a glass of water, you will find that you will get going much quicker. Water kicks starts your system, alleviates that dry mouth feelin, and gets all the cells and the muscles rearing to go. Coffee just kick starts your brain, and sometimes that can take longer than you think.

9. Alleviate Heartburn

Despite popular belief, one of the main reasons we get heartburn is not necessarily because we ate that extra hot burrito the night before, but because we have a serious lack of water in the upper section of our gastrointestinal tract. It is one of the major signs of dehydration in the body. One of the biggest mistakes people make is reaching for an antacid product to alleviate the symptoms instead of drinking a glass of water. Over time this could lead to further complications of the stomach, such as ulcers. Now if that is not a serious motivation to drink more water, then I don’t know what is.

10. Vital Cell Function

When there is not enough water in the body, the body starts to draw any water it can from the bloodstream, and without even having to explain that, you know it’s bad. Your heart has to work that much harder because your blood is thicker and your body starts to conserve water by redirecting the blood to less vital areas. This puts great strain on the body, the organs and the cells, something very important to think about when you reach for that soda.
There are many reasons to drink water, and it is a fact that even though we are all aware of the benefits of drinking water, most of us are not anywhere near getting our quota of water per day. The motivation to drink more water is not always strong, when a cold beer or nice fresh cup of coffee is sitting in front of us. These are just 10 reasons to drink more water, what was the most important one for you?

8 Non-weight Related Reasons to Work Out …

8 Non-weight Related Reasons to Work Out …

8 Non-weight Related Reasons to Work Out ...

We all know that exercising is one of the keys to staying trim but I want to talk about some reasons to work out that have nothing to do with dieting! Yes ma’am, there are a plethora of non-weight related reasons to work out that will have you wanting to get out there and break a sweat! So if you thought that exercising was just for gym rats and weight loss, keep reading for the lowdown on the various benefits of working out!

1. Improve Your Mood

Have you ever noticed that you’re in a good after working out? People who exercise regularly are at a lower risk for depression and I can totally see why! Even if you start off your workout in a foul mood, it’s hard not to smile and be proud of yourself after you get through a workout! After just 20 minutes of exercise, your body will produce endorphins which are our body’s natural, feel-good neurotransmitters that boost your mood and make you feel great!

2. Improve Your Memory

Another one of the awesome benefits of working out is that it can actually help boost your brain power! A study by Columbia University Medical Center found that the participants in the study who exercised performed better on memory tests than those who didn’t exercise. Exercise increases oxygen and it can also augment the effects of helpful chemicals in the brain so exercising your body is also like exercising your brain!

3. Improve Your Energy

Do you find yourself feeling fatigued often? Do you feel like you need an energy boost but caffeine just doesn’t do it for ya? Well, you’re in luck because working out regularly can give you a natural energy boost and help fight fatigue! A study published by the Psychological Bulletin reported that sedentary people who took part in a regular workout regimen reported an increase in energy and improved fatigue. The next time you feel tired you might want to take a nap but a brisk walk might be just what you need!

4. Reduce Anxiety

Working out doesn’t just keep the blues away, if you experience anxiety you can help fight off the symptoms of anxiety in as little as ten minutes with exercise! Doctors “prescribed” a 10-week exercise program for individuals with anxiety and the benefits were said to be almost the same as with the drug clomipramine. This is great news! Exercise is something that we can all work into our lives to help improve our well-being!

5. Keep Bones Strong

We normally don’t think about strengthening our bones when we exercise but it’s definitely another reason to exercise! As we age, our bones tend to decrease in density but we can help keep our bones strong and healthy by regularly exercising! Engaging in at least 30 minutes of exercise can help strengthen your bones and reduce age-related bone loss!

6. Boost Your Immune System

Exercising helps us feel good and there’s also evidence that it can help give your immune system a boost also! Regular exercise can help you fight off bacterial and viral infections and helps fight off stress which can increase your chance of getting sick. Engage in a consistent exercise routine to see some big benefits in your health!

7. Increase Your Self Esteem

We’ve learned that working out has tremendous mental health benefits and it also has a positive impact on self-esteem! A 2004 study published in the Journal of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing found that those with low self-esteem got the most benefit from exercise. But I think we can all agree that exercising makes us like a champion and why shouldn’t we all take advantage of this pleasant side effect?!
I know life gets busy and it can be tough to have a regular workout routine but there are just so many reasons to exercise! I hope this list inspires you to stick to your workout the next time you feel tempted to skip it. There are just too many benefits for us to pass up and we’ll reap the benefits for years to come! What inspires you to work out?
